Damascus Northern Entrance
The DNE Competition reimagines the northern entrance to Damascus as a contemporary civic gateway, transforming a major transportation corridor into a memorable architectural and urban experience. The proposal is defined by seven monumental gateway structures spanning the highway, inspired by the geometry of the Damask jasmine, a symbol deeply connected to the city’s cultural identity.
Abstracted into lightweight parametric lattices, the canopies create a rhythmic sequence of arrival while providing essential shade to roadways and pedestrian areas. Their porous structures filter sunlight, encourage natural airflow, and integrate lighting that transforms the gateways into illuminated landmarks at night.
The intervention extends beyond the highway through landscaped parks, pedestrian promenades, shaded plazas, and gathering spaces that reconnect surrounding neighborhoods. Native planting and jasmine gardens reinforce the project’s identity while improving environmental comfort. Together, architecture, landscape, infrastructure, and cultural memory create a distinctive gateway celebrating Damascus’s heritage while expressing a contemporary vision for its future.
